In wedding news of course Vidya Balan and Siddharth Roy Kapur tied the knot on December 14th 2012 in combined Tamil/Punjabi tradition in a bungalow in Bandra. It was a super private affair and they were only paparazzied once they left for Vidya’s Juhu residence. She wore her trusted favorite – a red Sabyasachi sari which she helped design herself. The juice I have however comes from a post-wedding party hosted by UTV head honcho Ronnie Screwvala in honor of the newly-weds at his Breach Candy residence the following week.

The A-List turn out included The BachchansAmitabh, Jaya, Abhishek and Aishwarya, Karan Johar, Anil & Sonam Kapoor, Rekha, Katrina Kaif, Arjun & Mehr Rampal, Arbaaz Khan, Sridevi & Boney Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Imran Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Kalki Koechlin, Anurag Kashyap, Simi Garewal, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Rajkumar Hirani, Prabhudeva, Rishi Kapoor, Boman Irani and Shah Rukh Khan who was the last to arrive at 1:45am. There are no pictures anywhere of this event because the photog community decided to boycott since they couldn’t score a good vantage point to shoot from (the celebrities were all driving in and the lane was too tiny.) *Awww* dear Mr. Screwwala next time pretty please lay out the red carpet so we can all enjoy the show!

Psst! I did manage to score a video of the wedding party, so check it out!

Aishwaraya Rai Bachchan has started making a comeback on the social circuit, if not Bollywood-wise just yet. I spoke to celebrity photog Atul Kasbekar (yes the Kingfisher Calendar guy) who also manages a lot of Abhishek and Aish’s endorsement deals and he made a good point. Aishwarya Rai has been working since she was 17-years-old!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan & Beti B

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan & Beti B

So if she wants to kick back and enjoy a “normal” life it’s pretty understandable! For now we’ll just have to make do with her celebrity sightings and hope that she brings baby Aaradhya Bachchan a.k.a “Beti B” along! (Can you believe she’s already a year old?!)

Aaradhya's First Birthday

Aaradhya’s First Birthday

This year kicked off again with awards season: Big Star Entertainment Awards, Zee Cine Awards, Color Screen Awards, Filmfare and Stardust. As expected Barfi! and Kahaani cleaned up with best actress honors going to mostly Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan while Ranbir Kapoor emerged victorious amongst the boys.

In the fashion rundown both Neha Dhupia and Anushka Sharma chose to wear Victoria Beckham to the Filmfare Awards while Priyanka Chopra picked a strapless satin Armani Prive gown in teal and Deepika Padukone wore cut out Prabal Gurung. (No prizes for guessing what Vidya Balan wore, yup Sabyasachi once more.) Personally I thought Alia Bhatt looked darling in a Manish Malhotra lehenga!

10 Confessions About The Filmfares Last Night!

The Filmfares! (photo courtesy | filmfare.com)

The Filmfares! (photo courtesy | filmfare.com)

Confession: I love Bollywood award functions. Say what you will about the actual awards, but sometimes I need three hours of mindless entertainment and since my Andaaz Apna Apna DVD has already worn thin, I turn to these functions for my fix. There’s also a certain predictability that comes with a Bollywood award function: You know Karan Johar is going to host a segment. You know Shah Rukh Khan is going to make a self-effacing joke. You know someone’s going to cheer a little louder (or cry a little harder, depending on the circumstances) when the cameras turn to them. So, of course, since the Filmfares were being telecast last night, I had to make special room in my Sunday to kick back and enjoy this – and these were the thoughts (however random) I brought back with me after the show.

Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra

Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra

1. It’s like the editors aren’t even trying anymore. So we’re shown a shot of Priyanka Chopra clapping and smiling, followed immediately by Sridevi doing the same – except that the seat next to Sridevi is empty and very clearly carries the name “Priyanka” on its reserved sign. It’s especially disconcerting when we’re shown Deepika Padukone‘s hearty laugh in the midst of something not-so-funny at all, and when we have to see Parineeti Chopra/Huma Qureshi do their same cheer multiple times.

But I guess since Amitabh Bachchan didn’t attend this ceremony, the editors had to make do with other things – after all, this time around they couldn’t keep showing Rekha and then immediately cutting to shots of AB senior.

Rekha

Rekha

2. Speaking of Rekha, her sindoor was glaringly obvious – so much so that even MissMalini‘s mom e-mailed us this morning, wondering aloud whether it was as an ode to her late husband or whether something new was happening. Personally, I believe it’s just Rekha being Rekha – she had mentioned in an interview some years ago that she thinks sindoor “suits her”. What do you think?

3. Also on the point of Rekha: Let’s try this radical new thing next year, where we ask her to give away an award that is not Best Actor/Actress. I think Vidya Balan has now taken enough blessings from her to last a lifetime.

Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan

4. Dear Varun Dhawan, why are we not dating yet? Let’s rectify this problem immediately, please.

5. I was a tad disappointed with Saif and SRK’s gags this year around – I mean I laughed as much as the next guy at the “Jab tak hai Salman” and “Ayushmann couldn’t come” jokes, but mostly it didn’t have the magic their post-Kal Ho Naa Ho hosting stints did. I think it’s because they’ve stopped being as irreverent in the hopes of not offending as much, and therefore are cracking the majority of jokes on themselves.

6. SRK’s Don ponytail is back. Why, God? Why?

Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh

7. So how amazing was Ranveer Singh‘s performance? I’m not even a fan, really, but his was easily the performance of the night for me – even though my Twitter feed is still blowing up with praises for Hrithik Roshan.

8. Why was Barfi! the trend-setting movie? What trend did this film start? It was definitely one of my favourite films of the year, but I didn’t understand this award.

9. Ranbir Kapoor‘s acceptance speech was amongst the best of Filmfare. Unexpected, but totally apt. :)

10. Why no Bachchans at the function this year? Especially since Aishwarya came out to promote them at one of their pre-event press conferences?

Battle of the Cover Girls: Katrina Kaif v/s Deepika Padukone, Who Does Retro Better?

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif

How cute does Katrina Kaif look on the latest cover of Filmfare? She’s wearing Zara and there’s that whole retro vibe going on thanks to the headband she’s sporting. Interesting that they decided to go with the retro vibe because their previous cover girl, Deepika Padukone, channeled that look for her cover as well. Also, is it just me or does something about Katrina’s look remind you of an iconic symbol of feminism?

Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone

Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone

Which of the two covers do you prefer? Hard to pick one, actually, because I like them both – Filmfare has been doing some amazing covers lately; the Vidya Balan one is still amongst my favourites – but I think I’d pick Deepika’s by a small margin. What do you think?

As for iconic symbol… the moment I saw Katrina’s cover I thought of Rosie the Riveter - it’s definitely something to do with the headband! See what I mean?

Shah Rukh Khan Reveals the Greatest Advice He's Been Given by Amitabh Bachchan!

Shah Rukh Khan

At an event at Escobar yesterday, King Khan unveiled the cover of a special Filmfare issue that features him, Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar on the cover. All three of them are legends in their own rights, so when we got a chance to throw in a question at the press conference, we couldn’t resist asking Shah Rukh what his favourite memories with both these superstars are. In his answer, he shared the best advice he ever received from Amitabh, which had us cracking up! Here’s what he said.

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh says: “I asked Amitji, what’s the last thing you think when you go on stage? He said, “Main tumhe batana chahata hoon ki jo aakhri cheez hai, woh bahut important hai [I want to tell you that the last thing is the most important]. Just before you go on stage to speak or perform, zip zaroor check kar lena ki khuli na ho [make sure you check that your zip is done]. I think that’s the greatest learning I’ve got from the greatest Mr Amitabh Bachchan, because it’s basic, it’s honest, it’s clear.”

The best thing about attending a Shah Rukh Khan event is being able to come away chuckling over the witty things he said throughout. He is one charming guy, and he always knows how to keep a crowd entertained – whether by making hilarious comments that’ll make you laugh, or adorable comments that’ll make you go *awww*. This happened yet again when he came out to launch the cover of the recent Filmfare issue at Escobar in Bandra, and this time we made sure to keep a track of the best things he said in order to share them with you!

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

“I’m joking, please don’t make it the headline that I’m going to beat up someone.”

Filmfare editor Jitesh Pillaai mentioned that Shah Rukh never asks to see a photograph once taken, which he says speaks a lot about both his humility and self-confidence. SRK said the reason behind that is because if you love someone, you will always do your best to make them look good. He believes that whatever the media writes about him comes from a feeling of love – except for two or three people, he says, who he will “speak to” whenever he meets them, “after closing the bathroom door, not publicly, because someone would take a photo on a phone.” Then he laughed and clarified that he was joking and asked the media not to make it a headline.

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

“It’s a matter of great importance, let’s not just make it into snippets and headlines.”

Shah Rukh was asked for his comments about Sanjay Dutt being sentenced to jail, and he kept it classy by reminding everyone that it was an important matter and should not just be relegated to becoming someone’s snippets. He did say, though, that since they’re friends, at times like these you tend to think about the family and children more. But he refused to speak on the subject anymore, saying that everyone has to deal with things the way they have to.

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

“Start from your side, and I’m sure everyone else will also follow.”

One journalist asked why only stars get to be featured on magazine covers, and not people like the cinematographers or choreographers. A fair enough question, which Shah Rukh handled smartly: he asked the guy where he was from, the guy mentioned a website, and Shah Rukh said, “How many technicians do you put on the front page of your website? Start from your side, and I’m sure everyone else will follow.” Then he went on to say that the most important part of a film is made by the technicians, but everyone has a job defined, and only actors would look good on covers because they wear make-up and the like. He then compared the entire thing to a bar of soap, which is pretty funny – check out the video to see how he explains it!

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

“Of all the names that I’m called, I like papa the best.”

Earlier in the conference, Shah Rukh was told that he has been given several taglines – “King Khan,” “Baadshah,” “Global Icon,” “Baazigar,” the like. So one journo asked him which title he liked the best, and he very sweetly said, “Of all the names that I’m called, I like papa the best.” *Awww*

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan

“Main Baadshah hoon, jahan jaana chahta hoon, jaata hoon.”

Another journalist asked SRK about the IPL matches, saying that he was too busy to go out and support his team, Kolkata Knight Riders. Shah Rukh asked, “Tujhe kaise maloom main kitna busy hoon? Mujhe maloom main kitna busy hoon.” (“How do you know how busy I am? I’d know how busy I am!”) The reporter persisted, asking Shah Rukh if that meant he would attend all the matches then. He rather exasperatedly (but smilingly) said, “Mera jis match mein dil chahega, main jaaonga. Nahin chahiye, nahin jaaonga. Main Baadshah hoon, jahan jaana chahta hoon, jaata hoon.” (On a side note, while that video title insists he was speaking about the Wankhede ban, he definitely wasn’t – he was only speaking in terms of his schedule. Wankhede didn’t come up at all – though I don’t doubt the journo was trying to get around to that point.)

Sonam Kapoor turns 28 today! The fashion diva got Bollywood to sit up and take notice of their dressing when she arrived on the scene. Whether dressed up in Cavalli or at ease in Anamika Khanna, Sonam isn’t afraid to take risks. While we’ve discussed her style at great length on the blog, I’ve rounded up her best mag covers.
